Unsubscribe

Marketing email must let people opt out. Flinkk Mail does the hard parts for you: a personal unsubscribe link, the one-click button that Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook show next to the sender, and a list of people who opted out that every later send respects.

Sending marketing email

Any of these marks a message as marketing:

  • Use one of the Marketing templates (newsletter, product launch, sale, event, abandoned cart, win-back).
  • Use any template that contains {{unsubscribe_url}}.
  • Send with "unsubscribe": true.
{
  "from": "Acme <news@acme.com>",
  "to": "sam@example.com",
  "subject": "What we shipped in November",
  "html": "<p>Three things that make your week easier.</p>",
  "unsubscribe": true
}

Flinkk Mail then:

1. Creates a link just for that recipient and fills {{unsubscribe_url}} with it. If your own HTML has no {{unsubscribe_url}}, a small "Unsubscribe" footer is added. 2. Adds the List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers so mail apps can unsubscribe in one click. 3. Records the message as marketing, and refuses recipients who already unsubscribed.

Marketing messages go to one recipient each, with no cc or bcc, because every link is personal. To send to a list, use `POST /api/v1/emails/batch`. You still add your postal address to the message; the templates have a company_address variable for it.

What the recipient sees

The link opens a page that asks them to confirm. Nothing happens until they press Unsubscribe, so email security scanners that open every link do not unsubscribe anyone by accident. Afterwards they see a confirmation with a Subscribe again link in case it was a mistake. The address is partly hidden on the page.

What it blocks, and what it does not

  • Unsubscribed addresses are skipped for marketing messages only. Receipts, password resets and other transactional

email still reach them.

  • They appear in your suppression list with the reason unsubscribed. Removing the entry there

subscribes them again.

  • Subscribing again never lifts a bounce or complaint block.
  • A send to an unsubscribed address returns 422 recipient_suppressed.

Check before you send campaigns

  • Only email people who agreed to receive it. Unsubscribe links are required, not sufficient.
  • Keep complaints low. People who mark you as spam are suppressed for all mail.
  • Links are signed with your deployment's secret, so they cannot be guessed or edited to unsubscribe other people.
